Learned spots should go down when clicked!

wispfrog   September 30th, 2010 3:14p.m.

It just occurs to me that I'm almost always changing a green spot to a yellow or red one, and not the other way round.

Why then when clicked do they cycle round the opposite way, meaning I need two or three clicks.

Is it really the case that lots of people are going in that direction, and I'm just picky, or would this be a worthwhile UI change?

Maybe a poll?

jww1066   September 30th, 2010 4:12p.m.

I agree, this is annoying.

ジェレミー (Jeremy)   September 30th, 2010 6:10p.m.

Also agree

sarac   September 30th, 2010 7:35p.m.

Agree but I am used to clicking 3 times so I'd have to learn a new habit. I do the downgrade 100 times for every instance I need to click to "very easy".

arp   September 30th, 2010 7:55p.m.

I never use "too easy" or whatever the blue button is, so for my usage that one could be eliminated. Then there would be one less click. However, it may be that others use that one...

Thomas   September 30th, 2010 8:48p.m.

I use the 'too easy' but not nearly as much as 'forgot' or 'so-so'.

I vote reverse the order.

Nicki   September 30th, 2010 9:08p.m.

I do use blue, but not nearly as often as I use yellow.

nick   September 30th, 2010 9:47p.m.

Good idea to reverse the order, but everyone would be confused at first. I wonder how to do it so as to minimize that.

贺知宝   September 30th, 2010 9:56p.m.

I also would prefer for the order to be switched. It would take a while to get used to, but well worth it in the long run.

jww1066   September 30th, 2010 10:01p.m.

Another issue while we're at it is that the button is very tiny, as if purposely flouting Fitts's Law.

I hadn't really noticed, but it would make more sense for it to go the other way. With the hints that you get in the writing, it is more likely that you would be moving from correct to so-so. That would probably encourage people to be more honest in their estimate of their own learning too.

However, I don't really care. I like the feeling when I just have to click it once because sometimes I think the the word is too easy.

Byzanti   September 30th, 2010 11:00p.m.

I'd like to see it switch from Green to Red first (no matter what the rest of the cycle is like). I figure know/don't know are the most common. Yellow I guess is popular as people don't want to push stuff back to the beginning, but in the long run is bad as your queue just fills up with half known stuff that doesn't go away... Blue should certainly be the last.

But I agree with James, while I'm pretty used to it, the button is small.

贺知宝   September 30th, 2010 11:20p.m.

Hmmm... speaking of that. I would love an explanation of what happens when the different buttons are clicked. I know that the algorithm is very complex, but a general explanation of how pressing yellow versus red affects the frequency of the character could be very helpful.

Byzanti   October 1st, 2010 12:18a.m.

I think it goes something like...

If you're reviewing an item last seen 2 weeks ago:

- Red (1 or 2 days later you'll see it again).
- Yellow (just under 2 weeks later you'll see it again).
- Green (4 weeks later you'll see it again).
- Blue (it disappears into a time space bubble and appears sometime before the second coming).

jww1066   October 1st, 2010 12:29a.m.

@nick even if they're confused, they'll quickly notice the colors (unless they're color blind... hmmm...)

west316   October 1st, 2010 8:32a.m.

I disagree with one click for red. Jumping around like that is a really bad idea. I personally like it as is. I use just about all of the colors. If there are changes, something which I am not entirely for but not entirely against, then at least leave the order the same. Whether 3-2-1-4 or 3-4-2-1 that part really needs to stay the same. Jumping to red is a REALLY bad idea in my opinion. I do not believe it will encourage people to instantly go red. Even if it does, why is that more important than the software's intuitiveness?

(Note: I do use blue quite a bit actually. It is useful when a word gets uploaded from a list and in fact you have known it for ages. It just hasn't been uploaded to your Skritter list till that moment.)

The swapping the order bit is kind of a meh situation to me. I like it as is, but could adapt to the other if the majority of the community wanted it.

skritterjohan   October 1st, 2010 11:29a.m.

I use blue to mark all the words with 'er' at the end that I am already studying without the 'er' :) I use so-so and red on occasion. So I use all of them. I do not see a real reason to change the order as it would be counter intuitive.

The only change I could see working okay is perhaps to reverse the order to 2 1 4 3 instead of 4 1 2 3.

wispfrog   October 1st, 2010 4:19p.m.

Sounds like if you were to change it be sure to change the size at the same time, so it looks different.

But not really a consensus here on if it should at all
